We lived near the beach in West Vancouver. From a very early age I started combing the beach and bringing home my finds. When I became interested in art in my mid teens I started looking at objects in a different way. I quietly was getting an aesthetic sense. I am pretty sure I had ambitions on becoming an artist from that early age. I was plagued though by the fact that I could not draw, a prerequisite that I thought was necessary to becoming an artist. I had thought learned about found art and I think this piece was very much in that spirit. I see this as a portrait of Charles de Gaulle.
