Yes, in the summer of 1971 I made a pilgrimage. It was a tour that started in Toronto and went on to Ottawa, Montreal, New York, WashingtonD.C. New Orleans, Houston and Los Angeles. While I had seen a lot of work at the Vancouver Art Gallery most of my art experience and exposure had come from books and slide lectures. I saw a ton of work on this trip.

I knew Joyce Wieland’s work and got to see her retrospective at the National Gallery of Canada. Her show curated by Pierre Theberge was a game changer for me. She gave me permission to think beyond the box and to realize the value and power of humour. I love her sense and use of materials.
