Tightrope - 1977

Sculpture

Wood, metal, denim

Dimensions: 36” x 30” x 168”

Collection: National Gallery of Canada

Tightrope, Prairie Mountain and Stool  were all made for the exhibition Sculpture on the Prairies curated by Bill Kirby. When Bill asked if I had any work for the exhibition I made a proposal. My proposal was to solicit a space for me to work in. I would make the work using only materials and tools available on site. I would be able to use anything or tool that I normally carried on my person. We produced an ad for the Winnipeg Art Gallery newsletter seeking a space. The ad was placed anonymously and replies were sent to a post office box in a nearby town. I would have to accept the first response, that is I had no choice in where I would work. The first response was a one room schoolhouse about 80 miles southwest of Winnipeg. The schoolhouse had been closed for some time and had been cleared out of most materials.

All 3 works were fashioned using a pocket knife, the rope for the tightrope is braided from my jean jacket. It was a challenge. All three works invite the viewer to participate.
