This body of work is made up of three groups of photos. They include the I’m Late - I’m Late series, The Desk Top Journey Studies and The Studio and Ladder series.
I was asked by Pat Macaulay to have an exhibition at the Harbourfront Galleries. Pat had a very specific gallery in mine. This space was a convergence of corridors, sort of like the hub of a spoked wheel.
There were over 20 doors that lead off this space. It is quite disorientating and a real challenge.
I did not have any existing works that I felt would fit the space. I was intrigued by these doors or portals as they were passages to another space or conceivably to another world. Back in the studio I realized that the studio was a portal to another world , all of it a world of my own making. With this in mind I started thinking of doors that had offered me a choice - once inside which direction should I travel?
As it turns out all three series are a very loose autobiographical record of my journey.
The I’m Late -I’m Late series for Pat Macaulay’s exhibition included just the photographs of the large installation.
I decided to create sets/installations in the studio which I would then photograph. In preparation. I made a series of desk-top studies. They sort of map out my thinking but if you compare the two series they are really quite different.
The Ladder series was really me playing. As I had some 144 ladders on loan it was fun to see how they could occupy and take over the space.
The Ladders cried out to be used. Why not let them take over the space. Some pieces are just a lot of fun and it is a challenge to make something like this work. An unlikely combination as you might expect one ladder in such a space but what happens when the ladders populate and take over the space.
