I started writing this description many weeks ago. It started with: “I think there are moments, events and even things that we would like not to remember.” I then wrote a descriptive passage and by the time I had finished writing I wanted to reconsider the quote above, that is to say I want to go back and see if I work on this piece and make it worthy of keeping and exhibiting. Here is the description: “I built a rather large wooden table, the one characteristic that distinguishes the table are 2 portals, one on either side of the table and directly opposite each other. Should you extend your arm into one of the portals your fingers would encounter an object. Through touch you would realize you were feeling a pistol. This gun is a replica of a Colt 45. It is a gun in look only as the barrel is not bored and there is no firing pin. However the viewer would be able to see and make that conclusion. Once the viewer realizes what they have found and realizing there is another portal on the opposite side of the table is challenged. Do they invite or engage another viewer to extend their arm into the portal. Do they point the gun in their direction or turn it onto themselves or hold the gun in a neutral position. I have very mixed feelings about this work. While I made it, I am not sure if it reflects who I am, nor do I think I would want to put a viewer in this situation. I would be very challenged to show this work again.”
So having written the above I have been thinking and I am going to try and work this piece again. It is a challenge, is this about change, is it about a decision, why would I want to do this?
