Stool Tools- 1977

Sculpture

Wood, metal, teacups, cloth, nails

Dimensions: 19” x 17” x 17”

Collection:, Art Gallery of Ontario

Stool was one of a series of works made for the exhibition Sculpture on the Prairies . Please see description for Tightrope above for more information.

Stool is the most personal of these three works. It is a sort of souvenir. The text on the Stool seat can be changed between STOOL and TOOLS by using a small metal toggle on the side of the stool. There is also a lever which protrudes from the stool. If the stool top is reading TOOLS and you dress the lever and pull on the drawer handle a draw opens revealing many of the tools and materials used in construction of this series. Should the stool top read STOOL and you depress the lever a nail emerges though the chair seat. What might I be trying to say to myself and others?
