Destroyed
For over a decade I collected more than 600 family photo albums. In 2012 I felt it was time to pass on the custodianship of these albums. In collaboration with the Art Gallery of Ontario we established a public trust for the albums. We felt that while they had once been lost they had come together as a collection and we should maintain and honor that status. The AGO assumed the responsibility for some 235 albums and the balance were passed onto individuals in the community. Each person assumes the custodianship for an album. Using the VW Fotobug as a staging area, 400 albums were passed on. The albums and their new custodians can be found on our collective album Facebook page Album: A Public Project.
This work organized by the AGO also had two installations at the AGO. In a long hallway gallery a series of chairs were mounted on the wall. On each chair was an album waiting to be presented in the Foto Bug. Once the album had found a new home a photo of the album and new custodian was attached to the chair back. Upstairs there was a more formal installation of a selection of albums that had been selected to become part of the Art Gallery of Ontario collection.
