Portrait came about when NIcholas Metiver asked if I might prepare a didactic label for the Objects Waiting series he planned to exhibit. While the Objects Waiting series presents objects found in my studio and a few personal items, this only touched the surface, these were safe objects, I felt I could push deeper, show objects that have definitely shaped me or were objects that represented an important moment in my development. Many of these objects are family heirlooms. Many of the objects are presented such that the front view differs from the reflection of that object in the mirror which in reality is another object. The back reflected view informs the front viewer. Something I strive for in making artworks. There are many secrets in this work, so evident but many more hidden. Plus you see yourself just as i see myself looking deeper into an object.
I want to put you in my shoes. Wanting to put the viewer in the space/place of the artist. Often the thing you see can have multiple perspectives. Here what was directly in front of you was not always what you saw in the mirror’s reflection.
